FAHM Feature: Midtown Combines Culture and Clothing
For Sacramento-based clothing brand Midtown, representation has more than one definition. The clothing not only represents Sacramento and its diverse community, but for founder and owner Darren Pineda, it also symbolizes the possibilities of the region.
“Being Filipino and owning this brand means a lot to me. I definitely want to show the youth that look like me that it is possible to do things on your own, in your way,” Darren said. “I feel like it would be even more inspiring if they were to see it happening in a city where they grew up.”
This focus on the city makes Midtown a niche, one-of-a-kind brand, but Darren is ready to match the diversity of the area with his own expansion ideas.
“I’m mostly excited about expanding the brand into items further than clothing,” he said. “I have a bunch of ideas that I would like to bring to the city of Sacramento, and I feel like this platform will be my gateway into that.”
Expansion doesn’t mean the business will lose its focus on representation. Instead, Darren hopes the brand will widen both its product offerings and its reach.
“Midtown was created to provide fun, Sacramento-based clothing and more to the city, and it was also created to highlight other cool creatives that exist in the area,” he said. “The team is pretty diverse in nationality and talents as well.”
The Midtown brand had humble beginnings in Darren’s storage closet, but he explained how the quality of designs and garments has improved significantly in the last year a half. Within that same time frame, Midtown also became a team.
“I am thankful it is not just me doing it anymore. I am now working with people that I have been creating with throughout all these years,” Darren shared. “The community has supported me a lot. Seeing people enjoy the brand in person is definitely inspiring and motivating.”
For the Midtown brand, wearing Sacramento-inspired clothing is more than just representing the city – it also represents the richness of Sacramento’s diversity, uniqueness, and evolving culture.
